The San Francisco Zoological Society ("Society") is a non-profit institution that manages and raises funds for San Francisco Zoo and Gardens ("Zoo").  The Society's mission, supra, is summarized as the 3 c's: to connect our visitors with wildlife so that they care about nature and ultimately conserve it.  The Society's leadership team is comprised of a President & Executive Director as well as a professional team of Senior Managers. The Society endeavors to meet or exceed the standards of its industry peers, including those established by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums ("AZA"). For over 25 years, the Society has been continuously accredited by the AZA.

SUMMARY: Under supervision, performs a variety of non-skilled and semi-skilled tasks including performing deliveries, maintenance, construction, alteration, and repair to Zoo buildings, facilities, equipment, grounds; and performs related work as required by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Acts as a general laborer - digging, hauling, making deliveries, etc.
  2. Applies paint, varnish, shellac, etc.; prepares surfaces by scraping, sanding, etc.
  3. Installs and maintains simple electronic and electric equipment such as appliances, light fixtures, etc.
  4. Repairs and installs plumbing fixtures such as hose bibs, unplugs sewage and waste lines.
  5. Alters, repairs, and constructs structures of wood such as partitions, sheds, doors, fences, scaffolds, etc.
  6. Operates a variety of equipment including forklifts, pallet dollies, small backhoes, medium to light trucks.
  7. Breaks out concrete or asphalt using hand tools and/or pneumatic tools; sets forms, pours, tamps, smooths, etc.
  8. Interacts with Zoo visitors courteously and offers proper attention at all times.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum six months paid experience in basic maintenance/repairs, ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, good interpersonal and communication skills. 

LICENSES: Valid driver's license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee frequently is required to talk or hear.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

Salary Range: $19.54-$21.63/hour
