THE COMPANY

89bio is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of innovative therapies for the treatment of liver and cardio-metabolic diseases. The company's lead product candidate, pegozafermin (BIO89-100), is a specifically engineered glycoPEGylated analog of FGF21. Pegozafermin is being developed for the treatment of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and severe hypertriglyceridemia (SHTG).

THE ROLE

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, R&D Operations, the Associate Director/Director of Clinical Business Operations is responsible for the financial efficiency and processes of the R&D Operations department, and for on budget clinical trial deliverables. The incumbent main role is to define important financial process gaps, measure current state, assess strategic options for process or system advancement, improve projects' financial management, and set up appropriate metrics to track financial consistency and efficiency of R&D Operations.

THE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement departmental financial improvement initiatives and business processes to enhance departmental operations in alignment with the objectives of 89bio operations organization and company goals.
  • Lead the development of financial operational reports and dashboards providing real-time, drill down functionality that allows clear understanding of the current state of clinical programs including budgets vs. actuals for multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Conduct assessment on study-level budgets at the time of development and provide any guidance on adjustments to the Study Team Leads and Functional Leads, as appropriate.
  • Develop and manage framework/standardized financial processes and tools that promote standardization across clinical programs and studies.
  • Expand and guide use of innovation platform to assist and inform business innovation strategy.
  • Work with key financial performance metrics for R&D clinical programs.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to optimize cross functional financial and business synergies and improvements.
  • Lead vendor selection for clinical studies to meet study needs.
  • Lead and organize governance committees with vendors when appropriate.
  • Manage vendor by creating key vendor performance measures for improvement based on data.
  • Provide the Senior Vice President, R&D Operations with support in managing and oversight of all R&D Operations related budgets.

THE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in science, business management, finance, information technology or related field.
  • Proven previous Clinical Business Operations experience (preferably in a biotech/biopharma company) for at least 10 years, including at least 5 years of leadership experience.
  • Experience working with contracts and budgets for clinical programs/studies.
  • Proven track record in overseeing multiple projects and successful implementation and completion of business operations projects.
  • Proven track record in overseeing and managing vendor selection, governance committees with vendors and R&D contracts and budgets.
  • Experience working independently and in a team environment, being flexible and adapting in a changing environment.
  • Ability to proactively handle multiple tasks, manage a diverse range of functional activities and solve problems simultaneously.
  • Experience working with financial systems is a plus.
  • Travel may be required based on business needs (approximately 10-15%)

SALARY & LEVEL

89bio considers a range of factors when determining the salary and level. These considerations mean actual salary and level may vary. The salary range for this position is $180,000-$200,000 and will be commensurate with experience.
